Take your time with this exercise and answer as completely as
possible. Loosen up and let your creative juices flow. The better your
answers, the more powerful your resume will be, and you will stand out
above all the others vying for your dream job.
What 3 special
skills could you offer companies that pertain to the position you're
seeking? Proficiency in certain computer languages or programs, pilot's
license, internet experience, artistic talent, foreign languages,
customer service, managing others, shorthand experience, etc.
Here's some help:
You're
going to set up 2 lists: 1 for things you do really well and 1 for
things you would love to do even if you weren't being paid for it.
So
first write down 5-10 things that you do really well. What do you do
better and more easily than most other people? Your current work, some
studies you've had, a hobby? Let your imagination go into overdrive.
Write them all down, whatever comes into your head.
Once you have
those written down, rank them in order of which ones you enjoy the
most. 1 being the most enjoyable skill, and 10 being your least
enjoyable skill.
Next, what do you really enjoy doing? What would
you do even if you weren't paid for it? Write all this down and rank
them in order of which ones you like the most.
Next, see if there are any items that are in both lists. If so, these are your best marketable skills.
Write down the top 3 that you enjoy the most and that you think would be most attractive to your prospective employer.(
Now you need to locate the jobs that fit your 3 best skills.
Go
to any job search website, such as Monster.com or CareerBuilder.com,
and type in any or all of your best skills into the search boxes at the
top of the website.
The results that show up will give you a great idea of the types of jobs you should be applying for.
Now write down all of those jobs that seem interesting to you.
Once
you have chosen those jobs you are interested in, start applying and
send your resume and cover letter to those organizations. You may have
just found your dream job!
